Shockwave Therapy should always be used before a Cortisone Injection for morning heel pain relief
Heel pain debilitates so many people in the morning when they get out of bed. Some may experience the same thing when they get out of a chair after a big day on their feet. Unfortunately, whether it be plantar fasciitis or the Achilles they can’t do the things they love such as playing with their kids and exercise.
Our clinic treats hundreds of cases of morning heel pain whether it be underneath, behind the heel or even referring up the Achilles every week. We find that half of the new patients we see have had a cortisone injection before they see us. However, research and what we find at our Heel Pain Clinic is that shockwave therapy is far superior.
A 2016 study concluded Cortisone improved pain in the short term (ie 4 weeks) and that patients were more improved and satisfied with shockwave.
A study in 2018, concluded that at week 12, the pain level outcome from shockwave therapy was more efficient than corticosteroid injection on chronic plantar fasciitis. Whilst we are talking shockwave and cortisone, we can’t use shockwave until 6 weeks after a cortisone injection because it has weakened the tissue so much. It's widely accepted in the medical profession that you don’t inject a cortisone injection into the Achilles as it has the risk of rupturing the tendon.
How much do we use shockwave? It's one of the Adelaide Heel Pain Clinic’s first choice treatments. A simple Google search will reveal most websites saying positive things about shockwave. However, there are a few clinics in Adelaide saying it works 90-95% of the time. Yes, there were some research studies that got a 90% plus success rate…but there were also a few in the 60% range.
We are one of the biggest shockwave users in Australia, if not the biggest with over 100 treatments done every week and we would say the success rate is around 70-75%, and when we speak to other heel pain clinics overseas and interstate they are saying it is around three quarters of the time. So approximately one in four unfortunately don’t respond, but overall it’s still a great success rate.
A staggering 10% of the Australian population experience heel pain at some stage of their lives. Over the past 15 years we’ve seen over 10,000 patients and heel Pain is the #1 condition we see.
